People will have their final chance to pledge their support to the campaign to transform Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital into a community centre.
Caerphilly District Miners’ Hospital closed last year with services transferred to the new Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital in Ystrad Mynach.
Much of the old hospital site will be turned into affordable housing but the future of The Beeches building, which was built in 1924, is uncertain.
The building was paid for by the miners of the Rhymney Valley after they each put aside 6d out of their weekly wage of 12s 6d to raise the £30,000 needed.
The Caerphilly Miners’ Centre committee was set up to save the Beeches and is holding a coffee morning at the Visit Caerphilly information centre on the Tywn in Caerphilly on Saturday January 21 from 10am to 12 noon.
This is people’s last chance to pledge their support to keep the Beeches as a community centre before the committee and United Welsh Housing Association apply for Big Lottery funding in two weeks.
There will be free coffee and a place for a chat and to find out more.
For more information contact Katherine Hughes, project secretary, on 029 2088 6569 or email katherine.hughes@btconnect.com

I am sure that you would get more people to support a campaign to transform the Miners Site into a proper hospital.
Spot on, Ron James, the people have been duped. A proper hospital was run down and then closed to open an assessment centre costing £172 Million. A friend of mine that works at Ystrad Fawr 'Hospital' injured her finger whilst in work. She was sent to the Royal Gwent for treatment. Unbelievable!
On the subject of the Beeches I hope that the aim to save at least part of the site for something more useful than yet more houses. Any organisation that wants funding from the Lottery must be able to demonstrate community engagement, longevity and a coherent plan. The committee were warned of this by me and several others, in the early days of this project. They seem to have left things a until a bit late in the day; I did sign the petition though I fear that the Beeches will be demolished.
There was an old proverb Beware of greeks bringing gifts, the modern version must be Beware of Labour politicians promising new hospitals.
