The police officers who arrested a murderer just after he stabbed and killed a pensioner have been commended.
Police Constables Christopher Fairclough and James Bramwell arrested Martin Davies on March 24 last year as he was acting suspiciously at a bus stop in Llanbradach.
The 23-year-old, who suffers from schizophrenia, had just stabbed 66-year-old pensioner Gwen Poole to death in a completely unprovoked attack. In May this year Davies was given an indeterminate sentence for the murder.
PCs Bramwell and Fairclough were commended last night by Chief Constable Mick Giannasi for their swift and decisive action.
The pair were honoured at the Gwent Police’s annual Chief Constable Awards
Two members of the public were also praised during the evening. Paul Brown and Tristram Maggs, rescued 21-year old Louise Whittaker from Newport, who was trapped in a burning car on the A467 in Risca.
