A new community space in Groesfan has been officially opened with a party.

Caerphilly County Borough Mayor John Evans, unveiled the new community garden on an area of land at Groesfaen near Deri.

The scheme has been a working partnership between Caerphilly County Borough Council, the Deri and Groesfaen Community Partnership, the Groesfaen Residents’ Association, Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations and Groundwork Caerphilly.

The new garden has been paid for with a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government after residents were keen to see a recreational space for adults and play space for children.

Following consultation with the local community a landscaping design for the site was drawn up.

Residents, with the help of the council, appointed environmental artist Jenny Hall to develop the project.

The artist worked with the landscape architect for the garden and the community in developing ideas.

Mayor John Evans said: “I’m delighted to open this fantastic new community space.

“The garden has been created for local people and visitors to enjoy, breathing new life into a previously under-used area of land and I’m sure it will benefit the community for years to come.”
