Caerphilly Police Station, which is housed in the old urban district council building on Mountain Road, is to be sold off to save £50,000 a year.

Gwent Police is to put the Ty Bronrhiw building up for sale after deciding to scale back services and move to the old Post Office building in the Twyn, currently being redeveloped by Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Lindsay Whittle, the leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s leader is seeking information about the future of the historic council chamber in Ty Bronrhiw.

He has written to the Welsh heritage body, Cadw as well as Gwent Police and the National History Museum at St Fagans to raise his concerns.

He said: “Cadw have told me that the building is not listed but I believe the chamber should at least remain as it is part of Caerphilly’s heritage. It should be saved. Once it is gone there is no going back and so many fantastic landmarks have been destroyed over the years across the UK.

“I believe it is important to look after our past while always looking forward to the future. Although the police station is to close, as I forecast, that does not mean everything should be swept away as well.

“This chamber was the seat of local government in Caerphilly until 1974 when the old Rhymney Valley District Council was established, the predecessor to the current county borough council.”

Cllr Whittle had campaigned to keep Caerphilly Police Station open after news of its proposed closure first leaked out in November last year.

Hundreds of people signed an online petition to keep the station open but ultimately pressure on the police budget has prevailed.

In October the station reduced its opening hours from a 24-hour station to 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Over the next two years, while the Post Office building is being redeveloped, Gwent Police Authority will locate the scaled-back station at the old Campaign Newspaper office on Market Street.

Shutting the police station and moving will save Gwent Police Authority £50,000 a year as well as providing a substantial income from the sale.
