Fochriw Youth Centre given new home at community centre

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Tuesday April 24th, 2012.

A youth centre which was forced to close down because of its dilapidated state has been given a new home.

In March 2011, Caerphilly County Borough Council received a petition from youngsters in Fochriw raising concerns about the poor state of Fochriw Youth Centre.

A health and safety survey and building survey found substantial defects with the building and it was deemed to costly to repair.

Provisional proposals to give the youth service a permanent home in the Fochriw Community Centre were agreed at a Cabinet meeting last week.

Plans include leasing the community centre to the Fochriw Community Centre Management Committee over a 25 year period, so that funding totalling approximately £380,000 can be sought to extend the building with new toilets, a kitchen, an office, and a separate entrance.

The council has already earmarked £126,000 as a contribution to the required funding from the Education and Leisure Capital Programme for the financial year 2013/14.

Funding is currently being explored from a number of sources including the Heads of the Valley Fund and the Community Facility Activity Programme.
