Protest planned against Nant Llesg opencast mine

News | | Published: 17:00, Friday April 18th, 2014.

A protest against the planned Nant Llesg opencast mine is to take place at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Penallta House on Tuesday April 22.

The planned mine would be located north of Fochriw and west of Rhymney and developers say up to 239 jobs could be created.

The protest, organised by the Green Valleys Alliance, is expected to attract up to 300 people including Jill Evans, Plaid Cymru MEP and Lord Mike German, of the Welsh Liberal Democrats.

Campaigner Hayley Blanche, of Fochriw, said: “We already see the effects of pollution from the Ffos-y-Fran mine and that’s in Merthyr. This mine would be a lot closer and the effects would be far worse.”

Strange that the Welsh are always banging on about their rich mining heritage, they have a world heritage site to celebrate their great mining history, they lament the loss of thousands of jobs when mines closed and villages became ghost towns…..but when somebody wants to open up a mine they protest against it, I don’t quite understand that.

Me neither. I completely agree. They were all to quick to sing “Ding Dong the Wicked Witch is Dead” blaming her the pit closures but when a mine opens they still complain. Backward lefties…

I really do think the people in the Valleys need to think whether they want continuous unemployment or support jobs, and well paid jobs. I know Richard & Appleby said they would go if this goes ahead, why are they the only factory saying this, and is it true he has bought a premises in Abergavenny?

Bit of a difference between a mine shaft and the plan to remove half a bloody mountain.Check your facts first.
