Regulars have celebrated the opening of a new bar in Bedwas.

The former Bedwas Social Club, disparagingly known as the Cardboard Palace, has been given a £120,000 makeover by businessman Clayton Jones.

The Wonky Bar, on Church Street, held its official opening on April 23.

Mr Jones, who also owns the Aneurin Sports Bar in Penyrheol, said: “It’s taken us six months. We completely gutted the upstairs and downstairs and we’ve put in all new CCTV and fire systems.

“Everything that has needed to be done has been done.”

The entrepreneur said his next project would be to transform the Aneurin and that talks were currently ongoing with the brewery.

He added: “It’s a community asset that requires careful attention.”
