Bargoed man wins payout over work injury

News | | Published: 13:00, Tuesday May 6th, 2014.

A construction worker has won a £13,000 settlement for injuries sustained from using vibrating tools.

Hywel Jones, 28, from Bargoed, suffers from Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome after operating a variety of hand-held vibrating tools when he worked for Aggregate Industries UK Limited between 2004 and 2011.

Workplace injury lawyers, Irwin Mitchell, investigated the employment practices of the company and secured the payout for his pain, suffering and inability to carry out the same level of work.

Mark Lennon, representing Mr Jones, said: “Employers in this country have been aware of the risk of their workers developing HAVS from as early as 1975.

“However, I am still seeing a significant number of cases where employers have failed to follow regulations and it is vital that lessons are learnt across the industry by cases such as this.

“Hywel is now unable to work in a job where he will be exposed to vibration from hand held tools, which means he is significantly disadvantaged in the job market, through no fault of his own.”
