The Welsh Government is offering community groups the chance for someone to visit them and discuss the new organ donation law.
On December 1, 2015, the law around organ donation in Wales will change when a new soft opt-out organ donation system is introduced.
Under the new system, a person will have to opt out of the donation register if they do not want their organs donated after their death.
To raise public awareness of the new law, the Welsh Government is running a public information campaign called It’s About Time.
To support this, and as part of National Transplant Week running from July 7, a series of discussions will be held. Speakers from the It’s About Time campaign will be available to give a 30 minute talk on organ donation, free of charge, at group meetings and events across Wales.
These talks will provide general information on organ donation and details of the new legislation. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and find out more about what the options will be when the new law comes into effect.
Kayleigh Old, Public Affairs Officer for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in Wales, said, “Whether or not people support the new organ donation legislation, it’s vital that everyone is aware of the impending changes to the law and understand their choices.
“I think inviting a Time to Talk champion along to a local group meeting or event will be a great way for members of the public to find out face to face more information regarding organ donation in general but also the new Welsh Government legislation.
“Not only will people be provided with all the most up-to-date information, but there will be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the topic.”

Just how much is this probably unnecessary change in the organ donation system costing the Welsh tax payer? Surely it is both morally and ethically wrong to treat the dead like an old used car that has reached the end of it’s useful life so will be stripped down for parts. Is the cost of changing a perfectly good system justifiable, spending thousands or even millions to maybe get a very small number of extra donors. I for one will be opting out as it is wrong for a few politicians do decide that any parts of my body can be taken without my consent when I die.
