A dog stranded 30ft up on a cliff face in Machen was rescued last night by firefighters and the RSPCA.

Crews from Caerphilly and Malpas took part in the dramatic rope rescue on Newport Road, using restraining equipment from the animal charity at 8.30pm last night, June 9.

The tan coloured cross-breed dog had been missing for two days and was reunited with its delighted owner thanks to its microchip.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “The dog was very lucky to have been found and it was thanks to two passers-by who heard the dog’s barks that the alarm was raised.”

Meanwhile, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) had to extinguish three deliberate blazes lit across Caerphilly County Borough yesterday.

Grass was set alight on Coronation Terrace Rhymney, close to the Farmer’s Arms Pub and the Rhymney crew used beaters to put it out at around 9.30pm.

A garden shed was the target for arsonists on Bedwellty Road but Aberbargoed firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the blaze within ten minutes of arriving at 11pm.

Fire crews also responded to a call when a fence was set on fire on Lawrence Road, Caerphilly at around 7.20pm.

Again a quick response saw the fire out within ten minutes and Gwent Police were informed of all incidents.
