South Wales East AM wins commitment on disabled bus lottery

News | | Published: 11:00, Wednesday June 18th, 2014.

The First Minister has pledged to end the variation in how councils decide what disabilities allow for free bus transport.

South Wales East AM, Jocelyn Davies, won a commitment from Carwyn Jones at first Minister’s Questions.

She said:“There are significant differences between local councils in South East Wales when they make decisions about who is eligible for a disabled person’s concessionary bus pass.

“All disabled people should receive the same help to get around, no matter where they live.”

Concessionary bus passes allow pensioners and eligible disabled people to travel for free, but inconsistencies mean visually impaired people in Caerphilly are among those not eligible

Ms Davies added: “The guidance on bus passes for disabled people has not been updated since 2010.

“I am glad that the First Minister agrees with me that there should be no difference in service provision for disabled people in different areas. Now the Welsh Government needs to act.”
