A pub charity night collected £660 for an ex-soldier raising money for Help For Heroes.

Malcolm Price-Davies and his father-in-law, Martin Price, are set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in September.

The pair are aiming to raise £7,000 for the charity that has helped the veteran battle mental-health problems.

The Rowan Tree in Nelson held a night of entertainment, including karaoke and a raffle, last month and have also raised money for the trek with a Grand National sweepstake.

Mr Price-Davies said: “The karaoke was fantastic and the fund-raising was awesome.

“I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped raise money so far.”

The ex-soldier said he owes his life to Help For Heroes and charity Combat Stress and is confident of completing the Tanzanian mountain challenge.

He added: “People have told us you can’t train for altitude sickness. It’s a new experience for me and my father-in-law but we are trying our best because it’s for a good cause.”

The pair have so far raised nearly £6,500, just £500 off their target with over two months to go before they set off on their trek.
