With the World Cup in full swing, fans have been treated to a display of unrivalled international footballing skill – but the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar have nothing on these athletes.

Zorb Football sees its competitors encased in an inflatable ball with only their feet free to do the hard work.

Now a Caerphilly-based company is hoping to take the latest sporting craze and turn it into a local phenomenon.

Footbubble Ltd has been set up by entrepreneurs Andrew Evans and Sajan Miah with regular events being held locally and across South Wales.

The game itself is much like traditional football with two teams trying to outscore one another at each end. The difference is players are allowed to body bounce rivals off the ball. It certainly is a funny old game.

Andrew explained: “Zorb football is a new sport taking Europe by storm and we wanted fans in South Wales to get a taste.

Abertridwr resident Matthew Wood tried the sport for the first time in the village’s YMCA.

The 32-year-old told Caerphilly Observer: “As a rugby player I enjoy contact and I feel it’s about time the playing field was levelled between the two sports – it’s a lot of fun.”

Being encased in a giant inflatable ball does pose some problems for certain players.

With a track record for biting his opponents, Uruguay’s Luis Suárez may need to keep a puncture repair kit handy.
