Public sector strike action

News | | Published: 08:48, Thursday July 10th, 2014.

Firefighters will join a public sector strike on July 10 before walking out for eight consecutive days from Monday July 14.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) are striking as part of a three year dispute with the UK Government over pensions.
The union claim proposed changes to the pension scheme will see firefighters paying more, working longer and receiving less in retirement.

Matt Wrack, FBU General Secretary, said: “The Government must realise that firefighters cannot accept proposals that would have such devastating consequences for their futures, their families’ futures and the future of the fire and rescue service itself.”

The strike will follow a walkout of up to two million public sector workers across the country against a 1%, below inflation pay rise.

Unison, Unite, PCS, GMB and the NUT teacher’s union are among those who will take action that will result in the closure of council offices, rubbish tips and halt rubbish collections across the county borough.

PCS Union national committee member, Marianne Owens, said: “The Government has imposed a number of years of pay freezes and 1% caps which has led to an average cut of 20% to public sector workers’ pay in real terms.
“We are on strike to say enough is enough, we are here to fight.”
