Sponsor a tile at the Wales National Mining Memorial in Senghenydd

News | | Published: 12:00, Monday July 14th, 2014.

The Aber Valley Heritage Group are offering residents another chance to be part of the area’s mining heritage.

The group are giving people the opportunity to sponsor a tile dedicated to those killed in mining accidents at the Universal Colliery in Senghenydd outside of the 1901 and 1913 mining disasters.

The group are in the process of developing an area at the Wales National Mining Memorial to remember those 62 people who were killed in individual accidents outside of the 1901 and 1913 explosions.

A ceramic tile floor will be developed at the site, produced by Ned Heywood and Julia Land from Chepstow Ceramic Workshop and Gallery. Ned and Julia also worked with the community during 2012 and 2013 to produce the name tiles and colliery paviers which are already in place at the Wales National Mining Memorial.

To help fundraise for the new tiles, the Aber Valley Heritage Group are keen to offer local residents, relatives of those who were killed, or anyone who has an interest in the project the opportunity to ‘sponsor’ individual tiles.

Each tile costs £50 to sponsor, and will detail the name of the person killed, along with their age, occupation and date of death. It will also include the name of the person who sponsored the tile.

For further information on sponsoring a tile, please contact the Aber Valley Heritage Group by visiting www.abervalleyheritage.co.uk or by calling 029 20 830 445. The closing date for sponsoring a tile is August 31 2014.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall recently visited the National Mining Memorial. To read our full report click here.
