Gelligaer boxer Lauren Price’s coach has given her a message of support before the Commonwealth Games that hosts women’s boxing for the first time.

Price is in Glasgow to compete for Wales in the 75kg category and her coach at Gelligaer Amateur Boxing Club is excited by her chances.

Bill Summers said: “We want to wish Lauren the best of luck in the Commonwealth Games.

“I remember her fighting the English champion three years ago and she stopped her within 30 seconds.

“She’s good, I’m confident she can do well.”

Price began boxing at the Gelligaer club when she was 12-years-old and now at 20 will be going for gold in Glasgow alongside fellow Caerphilly County Borough boxer Kody Davies.

Davies, 19, from Pontllanfraith, boxes in the 91kg category and is Welsh amateur champion.

His first fight will take place on the evening of Friday July 25.

On Twitter the heavyweight fighter was confident of winning a medal.

He said: “Leaving Friday for Sheffield then to Glasgow 2014 to start my mission for a gold medal.”

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, his father and club trainer, Kevin Davies, said: “Things are going according to plan, they’ve been at some hard training camps and now are winding down before the games.

“Kody is very confident, we hope to be here for the duration.”

Team Wales are looking to build on the 19 medals they won in Delhi in 2010, which included three in the boxing ring.

Caerphilly-born Jonathan Edwards will be representing Wales in the hammer-throw after beating his personal best by over two meters at the trials in May.

Lawn bowls player Mark Wyatt, will return to the games after competing in Delhi 2010.

The 36-year-old from Caerphilly will compete in the triples and fours categories.
