Michael Pearce, of Nelson, is charged with the murder of six-week-old Alfie Sullock

A jury is expected to deliver its verdict in the case of a man accused of murdering a six-week-old boy who suffered brain damage.

The injuries to Alfie Sullock were said to have happened in the two hours Michael Pearce was babysitting on August 16 last year.

Mr Pearce, 32, of Nelson, allegedly beat his girlfriend’s baby with a shoe and a plastic bottle.

He denies murder and manslaughter and has told the court he did not do anything to harm the baby.

The jury at Newport Crown Court has been deliberating its verdict since Friday July 18.

The court has been told that Pearce was left alone with little Alfie while the baby’s mother had a girls’ night out with friends to celebrate his birth.

He texted mum Donna Sullock, 29, to say Alfie was fine – but four minutes later he dialled 999 to say the baby had stopped breathing.

Pearce claims he left Alfie on his own for no more than 30 seconds and that the baby was not breathing on his return.

An examination of Alfie found bleeding on the brain and bruising to the face and other injuries.
