A 22-year-old Caerphilly man was arrested on suspicion of assault after violence erupted at a peace march in Cardiff.

Video footage posted online shows tables and chairs being thrown as the protest march made its way through the city centre’s Mill Lane.

An estimated 1,500 people took part in Saturday’s march opposed to Israel’s military action in Gaza.

Cardiff South and Penarth MP Stephen Doughty took part in the protest organised by Cardiff Stop the War Coalition.

He told BBC Wales that some men had thrown things from the Walkabout as the march went past the St Mary’s Street pub.

He was also critical of South Wales Police’s operation covering the march.

The force has defended it’s policing.

After the march, a 22-year-old man from Caerphilly was arrested on suspicion of assault and a 33-year-old man from Pontypridd for affray.

Neither were from the rally group, South Wales Police said.

Both have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Police are speaking to witnesses and examining footage of the event.
