Caerphilly woman to hike Pen-y-Fan carrying water to raise money for Rwandan project

News | | Published: 13:00, Wednesday August 27th, 2014.

A Caerphilly woman is taking on the challenge of walking up the highest peak in South Wales carrying a bucket of water.

Amy Evans, 24, will tackle Pen-y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons National Park, on August 30 to support a project that fights poverty in Africa.

Amy, who works at the Visit Caerphilly Centre, will travel to Rwanda this September to work on the development programme for ten weeks.

She will be teaming up with Rwandan volunteers to tackle some of the problems facing the local community, after getting a place on the government-funded International Citizen Service (ICS) programme.

ICS allows young people, aged between 18 and 25, to contribute to long-term development projects in countries like Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, and Nepal.

Amy said: “I’ve chosen to carry a bucket of water up Pen-y-Fan to represent the 40 billion hours that African women and children spend walking to collect dirty water every year – time that could be better spent working to provide for their families or, for the children, in school.”

To sponsor Amy visit her Just Giving page or text ‘AMYE80 £ amount’ to 70070. To stay updated on her progress visit the Facebook page ‘Amy’s going to Africa’.
