A Bargoed woman who was attacked with a blade in Morocco has vowed not to be put off from volunteering overseas.

Naomie Greenslade, 22, was returning home from a restaurant during a trip volunteering at an orphanage when she suffered a deep cut to her leg after a man tried to rob her.

The dental nurse, who also volunteers as a first responder for the Welsh Ambulance Service, said she would not return to Morocco but is considering volunteering in Bulgaria.

She said: “I managed to volunteer for one day after the attack but by the afternoon it was too much and I had to rest my leg. It was the first project I’d been on. It’s such a shame.”

The attack happened on a trip organised by company Original Volunteers, who offered to fly her home, but she returned home as planned on August 31.

Ms Greenslade said: “They charged the man with attempted murder, he tried to bludgeon my chest.

“I refused to give my bag over but he was going crazy, swinging his arms and I was just trying to get away.

“I didn’t feel anything, I bent down to pick up the things from my bag and it was all in a pool of blood. I’m going to have a really big scar and it will take a while to heal.

“The guys I was with were brilliant. I was instructing them on first aid. I felt as if I wanted to fall asleep and they kept me awake and kept my spirits up.”

She also thanked the police, who caught the man within an hour and she was taken to see the High Commissioner.

She said: “He was apologising and promised to bring the man to justice.”
