A dog that was beaten up by two men and shot with an airgun in Rudry last week is making a steady recovery.
The male bridle lurcher was found collapsed in the verge on the end of Rudry Road on September 16.
A member of the public, who notified the RSPCA, said a woman riding a horse said she saw two men beating a dog and then ran off.
The dog, now named Sergeant, was taken to a vet for treatment, where it was discovered that he had an air weapon pellet in his skull.
But despite all the odds, Sergeant, who is around 10 years old, has improved significantly and is now recuperating at an RSPCA animal centre.
RSPCA inspector Selina Chan said: “Sergeant will be available for rehoming in the near future, which is great news.
“The vet has discovered he had a pellet inside his skull – suggesting that he had been shot by an airgun.
“An operation to remove it would cause more problems, but at the moment the pellet shards are not a major issue. Although he is still a bit wobbly.”
She added that information is still needed to track down those responsible.
She said: “We are still looking for leads and would like to speak to the horse rider who witnessed the incident.
“A kind member of the public has even offered a small reward for that person to come forward with information that leads to finding the suspects.”
