Nelson pub turfs bar ready for Ryder Cup

A local pub is going all out for the golf this weekend – turfing the whole of the bar area to give a great Ryder Cup atmosphere.

The Hollybush in Nelson will be carpeting the floor with turf to create its very own golfing green for the three days of the Ryder Cup on Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday September 28.

The idea is the brainwave of the pub’s owners Steve Ford and Lee Dare.

As well as turfing the whole of the inside of the bar, they will also be bringing a variety of golfing memorabilia to give a sense of place as well as having four large screens for customers to watch the golf live from Gleneagles.

Steve said: “We always make a bit of an effort for big sporting events. I’m a keen golfer and love watching the game so I just thought we’d do something really special this weekend.

Steve’s business partner, Lee Dare, added: “People travel from all over south Wales because of our good beer and great food. When the Ryder Cup came to Wales in 2010, it created a new following of people locally. If they’ve not made it to Scotland for the Ryder Cup the weekend, they can come here instead. It’s going to be a bit of fun for everyone.”
