Young people in Penyrheol, Trecenydd and Energlyn are being encouraged to put their name forward to become a Youth Ambassador.
The new role was launched by the wards’ community councillors, who have written to secondary schools encouraging them to find candidates.
An ambassador is set to be appointed next month, with the aim of encouraging young people to get involved in politics and their community.
The Plaid Cymru Chair of the Community Council, Cllr Steve Skivens, said: “The Community Council has only been partially successful in obtaining young people’s views and help on community initiatives and specific projects.
“This is not enough. It is vital our young people are heard and feel confident in bringing their views forward and can play a role in the way the community they live in is developed.
“The Scottish Referendum campaign was hugely successfully in engaging young people. They took part in debates and those over 16 had the opportunity to vote for the first time.
“We would like to replicate that enthusiasm for the democratic process and believe our young people are equal to such a challenge. The Community Council is also very keen to grow links between schools, youth groups, the council and young people themselves.”
Candidates will be interviewed by a panel of community councillors and the chosen candidate will serve for a year.
A Youth Ambassador, who will be a Year 11 pupil, will not have to live in the ward but be a pupil of a school in the area.
Those candidates not chosen as the Penyrheol, Trecynydd and Energlyn Youth Ambassador will be directed to join the youth forum in Caerphilly County Borough.
Cllr Mike Prew, Caerphilly County Borough Council Youth Ambassador, said we would welcome more young people to the youth forum who wish to become involved.
