A boat will sail on the Crumlin arm of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Risca once again, offering trips to the public, groups and schools.
Islwyn Canal Association will be launching Islwyn Lily later this month, offering two-hour trips to Pontywaun and back.
The boat will launch from Whysom Wharf, the site of an old brick works where the canal was used to help transport the bricks across the globe.
The association will use any proceeds to continue maintaining the canal, the side of which has been made accessible by Caerphilly County Borough Council for leisure purposes, allowing disabled access along the route and fishing platforms.
The volunteers hope to encourage schools to access the history and beauty of the area and the trips will pass a miners’ mass-burial site.
The group’s chairman, Richard Whysom, said: “It’s a very widely-used canal for bikers, hikers and Nordic walkers.
“It’s also part of the link to the Cambrian Walk, from Cardiff up over Twmbarlwm and onto North Wales.
“It would be perfect for primary schools to discover nature and there’s still a lot of history around here.
“We want to do projects to keep the canal alive for future generations. We are the custodians of the canal.
Secretary Amanda Bradbury said: “I just want to get the public involved and let them know what a lovely spot it is, because it’s absolutely beautiful.”
