Around 650 music students from Caerphilly County Borough and the wider Gwent region are to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The students will be premiering a new piece, called #Connect, from composer Dr Daniel Bickerton, the Director of Undergraduate Studies at the School of Music, Cardiff University.

Head of Caerphilly Music, Ken Hunt said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for students from Caerphilly and Gwent Music to participate in a national event at the Royal Albert Hall.

“We know that they have been enthused from just the rehearsals and are looking forward to performing this new piece in November.”

The new composition, which will be performed on November 16 to an audience of thousands, draws on the two channels of music and technology and how they help to connect young people together.

Dr Bickerton, who is also an ex-Gwent Music student, said: “I am so pleased to have been commissioned to compose a piece for the young people of South Wales to perform.

“This collaboration really is organic and evolves with the input of all the performers. It is fantastic to be able to give these young people this opportunity.

“I came through Gwent Music’s service and I would not be here without the opportunities this gave me. Music should be open to all, focusing on pushing and developing talent. There are so many more career opportunities in music than people often think and the skills that musicians learn are very transferable.”

The performance will be part of Music for Youth Prom, an annual event organised by the Music for Youth Charity.
