A Caerphilly man has been jailed for 12 months after he was stopped by police and found carrying a Taser while drunk.
Lloyd Evans, 44, of Trem Groeswen, Caerphilly, was found guilty of being in possession of Class B drugs, a prohibited weapon, and an offensive weapon in a public place.
He was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Newport Crown Court on Wednesday March 15, but will be released after six months on conditional licence.
Evans was stopped by police and found to be carrying the electric shock gun, but told officers he had just found the Taser, the court heard.
John Davies, defending, told the court that Evans had been drunk at the time.
He said: “The weapon was not charged, and there was no means to charge it. Therefore as a practical weapon, it was useless.”
Class B drugs were also found during a search of Evans’ home.
Judge Crowther added: “I do not accept for a moment that you had just found this weapon.
“However, it was not charged or chargeable and had no known charger. The explanation as to why you had it may not be rooted in logic as you were intoxicated at the time.”
Gwent Police Seargeant, Windsor Lewis, said that weapons like the Taser “pose a significant risk to public safety.”
He added: “We are committed to identifying anyone illegally possessing these types of items, taking positive action against them and removing the weapons from the streets.
“This sentence serves as a warning to anyone possessing these types of weapons.”
