A house explosion in Llanbradach has left two people with life-threatening injuries, police have said.

Emergency services were called to Dan-y-Darren, The Rise, at around 5.30pm yesterday, Monday, June 11.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing “two to three” bangs and one neighbour saw the house’s front door being blown off.

Five people in total were injured in the blast.

One person was flown to hospital in Birmingham, while three people were taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea and one to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Residents rushed out with water and first aid moments after the explosion.

Around half a dozen ambulances were in attendance as well as police, four fire engines, an aerial ladder and a water bowser.

In a joint statement, Gwent Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “The incident has caused significant damage to the premises and a cordon is in place as a safety precaution.

“Five people were taken to hospital, two currently have life-threatening injuries.

“A joint investigation is on-going in conjunction with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. No other people are being sought in connection with this incident.

“We appreciate the help and support of the community in Llanbradach and ask anyone with information to please call 101 quoting log number 360 11/06/18.”

Andrew Hopkins, Wales and West Utilities Director of Operations said the gas mains were not to blame for the explosion.

He said: “We immediately sent engineers to the scene.

“On arrival they found a house on fire. Working alongside other emergency services, our engineers isolated the gas supply to the affected house and those in the immediate vicinity.

“Overnight we have carried out tests and can confirm that the explosion and fire were not related to the mains gas network.

“We will continue to support the emergency services as they investigate the cause of this explosion.”
