Supermarket chain Iceland is set to open a new store in Bargoed.

The store will be located in Lowry Plaza on Hanbury Road, which used to be occupied by Poundworld.

Work on fitting the store, which is hoped will bring around 30 new jobs to the area, will begin later this month.

Iceland is expected to open its doors to shoppers in the spring.

Iceland Managing Director Richard Walker said: “We’re really pleased to be opening our new store at Lowry Plaza. We are proud to be a genuine community retailer, serving customers on high streets throughout the country, and recruiting our store colleagues locally. We are naturally particularly delighted to be creating 30 new jobs in Bargoed.”

Caerphilly AM Hefin David said: “I welcome the addition of Iceland to Bargoed Town Centre and the 30 extra jobs it will bring to the town. Town centres across the UK are struggling due to changing consumer habits and the growth of online shopping, so it’s positive to hear this announcement for Bargoed. In recent months I’ve been working with Wayne David MP in Bargoed to try to bring people together to examine what we can do to improve the fortunes of the town.”

Cllr Sean Morgan, Deputy Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We’ve been working very hard to secure a tenant for these units, and are delighted that Iceland have chosen the Lowry Plaza development as the location for their new store, which shows a huge vote of confidence in support for the local high street. Iceland is a strong high street retailer and brand which has stores on high streets right across the UK. I’m sure the community will warmly welcome this significant addition to Bargoed’s shopping offer.”
