Castle Gate’s Robi Khan collects an award with his son

An award-winning Indian restaurant has launched a new vegan menu.

Castle Gate, located in Castle View, in Caerphilly, is hoping to capitalise on the growing trend for meat-free meals.

Robi Ahmed, manager of Castle Gate, said: “We recently hired a new chef who has been vegan since he was very young.

“While we have catered for vegans for many years, it was his idea to create a dedicated vegan menu. Since its launch it has been very successful – customers really like it.”

Online reaction to the new menu has been positive.

One customer posted: “Food was really lovely, ordered the Stuffed Bell Pepper to start which was really tasty although milder than I’d imagined. Main was Vegan by the River.”

Highlights of the menu include a tasty Aloo Tamatar Ki Sabji – a potato and tomato curry – and a rich Tikka Masala made with coconut milk.

Due to the restaurant chef’s strict policy on separate kitchen zones for the preparation of the new vegan menu, Castle Gate is only able to offer the full vegan menu on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

In December last year, Castle Gate was named in the top 20 of the 2018 Restaurant Awards Welsh Edition – a list of the top 100 places to eat.
