Caerphilly Town Council has unanimously passed a resolution calling on Stagecoach to bring back the number 25 bus service.
The Caerphilly to Cardiff service, which stopped at the University Hospital of Wales, was axed at the start of September, with Stagecoach citing a lack of users on the route.
The service was replaced by an extended 86 route, which runs hourly instead of every 30 minutes.
Journey times to the hospital have increased by 33 minutes – taking almost an hour to get there.
The resolution was proposed by Cllr Simon Morgan, who said the loss of the service “has inconvenienced commuters and shoppers to Cardiff, as well as patients and visitors to the Heath hospital and visitors to Thornhill Crematorium”.
Cllr Morgan said: “Stagecoach claim they carried out a consultation of passengers but nobody who has approached me, and they are many, have actually been consulted.
“They claim people were informed of the decision, but many say they did not know until a week or so before the number 25 ceased service.
“To claim that few passengers used the service is also at best misleading as the bus was often full at peak times from Caerphilly and all the way to Cardiff centre.”
Cllr Morgan, who represents Plaid Cymru, added: “The campaign to reinstate the number 25 will not stop because Stagecoach is saying no.
“Their action goes against the broader demands in Wales for a more sustainable public transport system. The Labour-controlled county borough council and the Labour-controlled government in Cardiff have to take some responsibility.
“We should be demanding a more sustainable future. We need a government in Cardiff which can deliver that future.”
On September 6, Caerphilly AM Hefin David and MP Wayne David met with Stagecoach bosses to urge them to reinstate the service.
The AM and MP presented four petitions, signed by residents opposing the changes, to the company’s managing director Nigel Winter, but Stagecoach refused to change its stance.
Cllr Jamie Pritchard, who seconded Cllr Morgan’s resolution, said “Caerphilly’s AM Hefin David and MP Wayne David have been leading the campaign to try to make Stagecoach see sense on their terrible decision to withdraw this very popular service.
“I’ve represented residents who use the number 25 bus for journeys to the Heath Hospital in my dealings with Stagecoach. Residents are telling me they’re finding it very difficult now with this unwanted, convoluted new route.
“Bus deregulation in the 1980s was part of the damaging Tory privatisation agenda. My own view is all public transport should be renationalised to ensure people come before profit.”
