Bargoed run riot in win over Maesteg Harlequins

News, Sport | Rhys Williams | Published: 11:52, Tuesday September 24th, 2019.

Bargoed got their first win of the season after beating Maesteg Quins 53-0 in the WRU Championship.

At a sunny Bargoed Park on Saturday, September 21, the Bulls scored eight tries to send a warning to the rest of the league.

Centre Rhys Humphries opened the scoring with a try in the tenth minute to put Bargoed 5-0 up.

Ten minutes later, Steffan Jones scored a penalty to increase Bargoed’s lead.

A try from Ronny Kynes saw Bargoed take a 13-0 lead, which remained until half-time.

The Bulls started the second half brightly and got the scoring back underway within the first two minutes, this time through a Darren Humphries try.

Jones converted as Bargoed reached the 20 point mark, before a try from Jack Bunyan secured the four-try bonus point.

A second try from Darren Humphries followed, before Josh Prosser got in on the act with a try of his own.

At 39-0 up, Bargoed were reduced to 14 men when try-scorer Kynes was sin binned.

But being a man light didn’t slow them down, with Steffan Thomas registering his first try for the Bulls.

Jones converted to give Bargoed a 46-0 lead.

The rout was completed when Darren Humphries scored his third try of the game and Jones slotted over the posts for the two extra points.

Bargoed opened the season with a draw at Cardiff Met before being knocked out of the WRU National Cup by Premiership outfit Aberavon.

Bargoed return to action on Saturday, September 28 when they play Glamorgan Wanderers away.
