Around 300 people attended a concert to mark the 60th anniversary of Aber Valley Male Voice Choir.

Some people travelled from as far away as Essex, Doncaster, Frankfurt and even California to be at the concert, which was held at Bedwas Workmen’s Hall on Friday, October 25.

The choir opened the evening by performing In The Beginning, which was written by the choir’s founder, David John Evans.

The choir went on to perform a variety of Welsh songs, such as Gwahoddiad by Lewis Hartsough and Tydi a Roddaist by Arwel Hughes, as well as Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau – the national anthem of Wales.

The choir also performed songs from across the globe, including Les Champs Elysees by French-American singer Joe Dassin, Israeli folk song Hava Nagila and the South African national anthem, among others.

Also performing at the concert was Serin – a musical trio made up of former-Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni pupils Caitlin Hudson, Rhianna Davies and Joanne Griffiths.

Serin performed a number of songs, including California Dreaming by The Mamas and The Papas, Elton John’s Can You Feel the Love Tonight? and Calon Lan.

They also performed Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by the Andrew Sisters, a song they performed at the Caerphilly’s Got Talent competition in 2008, which they won.

At the end of the concert, choir conductor Geraint Evans, chairman Paul Newman and president Wayne David MP all gave short speeches.

Anyone interested in joining the choir can attend practice on Mondays from 7.15pm to 9.15pm at Virginia Park Golf Club in Caerphilly town, or on Wednesdays from 7.15pm to 9.30pm at the Aber and Senghenydd Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Gwern Avenue, Senghenydd.
