Caerphilly-born midfielder Aaron Ramsey scored two goals as Wales beat Hungary to secure a place at the European Championships next summer.

Ramsey, 28, opened the scoring in the 15th minute, heading in from a Gareth Bale cross at a roaring Cardiff City Stadium.

Ramsey scored the second goal of the night early in the second half, slotting past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi to put Wales on the brink of qualifying for only their third ever major tournament.

Having missed the majority of the qualifying campaign through injury, Juventus midfielder Ramsey was making his first start in the competition and put in an inspired performance as Wales pipped the Hungarians to qualification.

After the game, Ramsey tweeted: “We’ve gone and done it again… Another summer for our country to look forward to. Thanks for all the messages, enjoy your night.”

Former Arsenal man Ramsey made his first appearance in the qualifying campaign, and his first appearance since moving to Italian champions Juventus in the summer, as a substitute in the 2-0 away win over Azerbaijan on Saturday, November 16.

The win set up the winner-takes- all Group E clash with Hungary in Cardiff, after Croatia topped the group.

Ramsey’s return capped off an incredible turnaround for Wales, who suffered back-to-back defeats against Croatia and Hungary in the summer as their hopes of reaching back-to-back European Championships seemed all but dashed.

Ryan Giggs’ side will now find out their group stage opponents when the draw is made in Bucharest, Romania, on Saturday, November 30.

The tournament will be held in venues across Europe to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the competition.

The tournament starts on June 12, with the final being held at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, July 12.
