Rhymney firm to create 91 jobs with Welsh Government grant

Business, News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:24, Friday February 7th, 2020.
91 new jobs will be created at Williams Medical Supplies

A medical supplies company based in Rhymney is to create 91 jobs thanks to a £650,000 Welsh Government grant.

Williams Medical Supplies (WMS) currently employs 178 at its Maerdy Industrial Estate base and that will grow to 269 over the next three years.

Established in 1986, WMS is the UK’s leading provider of medical supplies and services to the UK healthcare market.

The expansion is part of a plan to treble sales and implement a new automated pick and pack facility in the warehouse to increase levels of stock and improve efficiency.

The firm is also looking to move into other markets.

WMS currently delivers to more than 10,000 GP surgeries and primary care organisations throughout the UK.

Economy Minister Ken Skates said: “Williams Medical Supplies is a leading name in its field and today’s announcement will ensure they remain a prominent employer in the region for years to come.”

Williams Medical Supplies Managing Director, Hugh Hamer said: “At Williams we have very ambitious growth plans and it is exciting to see investment going into our facility in Rhymney to support this.

“Backing from the Welsh Government in both Williams and the wider community is a key element in the success of this project.”

In a joint statement, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney’s Assembly Member Dawn Bowden and Member of Parliament Gerald Jones said: “Over 90 new jobs for local people in the Upper Rhymney Valley shows the confidence that the Welsh Government has in the local area and its communities, and we’d like to thank Ken Skates AM and the Welsh Government for making this investment possible.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the new investment come together.

“This follows on from the recent investment by Sharp Clinical in Rhymney and is a real sign of confidence in local businesses.”
