More than a third of the jobs at a metal paper factory could go, it has been announced.
Glatfelter, a global supplier of “engineered materials”, said up to 36 positions at its site on Caerphilly’s Pontygwindy Industrial Estate were at risk.
The plant currently employs 91.
In a statement, Glatfelter said the changes are a result of an “ongoing commitment to aggressively manage costs and drive operational efficiencies” and part of a wider global shake-up of the group’s supply chain.
Under the redundancy plans, one of the factory’s two production lines will be closed down with its impact felt across other areas of the business including engineering, logistics and admin staff.
Wolfgang Laures, Senior Vice President, Global Supply Chain, said: “While these proposed changes are difficult given the impact on our people, they are necessary for Glatfelter to maintain our leading positions in composite fibres.
“We remain committed to working with the GMB Union leadership throughout the consultation period to ensure a smooth transition for those employees potentially impacted by the restructuring.”
The company has begun a 30-day consultation period with staff.
Nicola Savage, GMB Organiser for Wales and South West said: “We’re extremely disappointed by today’s announced job losses.
“This is a terrible blow for our members and the company, who have been running some lines at a loss.
“GMB members should have no doubt that we will continue speaking up for them, working constructively with Glatfelter to ensure that our affected members get the help and support they need in this uncertain time.”
US-based Glatfelter make a wide range of products from metalised paper to tea bag paper. It has annual sales of £724,000,000 and employs 2,600 people at its plants in America, France, Germany, Canada and the UK.
