Caerphilly’s Big Cheese Festival and a host of other events across the county borough have been cancelled because of Covid-19.

As well as the Big Cheese, which was due to be held between July 24 and 26, organisers Caerphilly County Borough Council have also cancelled Risca’s Beach Party due to be held during the last week of May. These will not be rearranged.

Caerphilly Food Festival has also been postponed, for now, with hopes that it may still go ahead.

The council said it had taken the decision following advice from Public Health Wales.

In a statement the local authority said: “We have also made the decision to postpone the Caerphilly Food Festival which was due to take place on Saturday May 2.

“We will try our best to rearrange the event for a future date and we will keep you informed of this as and when we can.”

The management at the Twyn Community Centre has taken the decision to close until the virus passes.

Many of the groups who use the centre have already cancelled, and full closure will allow the centre to have a deep clean.

Caerphilly Town Council will meet on Monday, March 23, to discuss events such as the Flower Festival – normally held in June – although it is looking likely this will be cancelled.

Cllr James Fussell said it is hoped that November’s fireworks display at Caerphilly Castle and December’s lantern parade will go ahead, but there is no guarantee.

Bedwas Workmen’s Hall, Caerphilly Workmen’s Hall, Newbridge Memo and Blackwood Miners’ Institute have all decided to close.

Bedwas Hall said it would be taking advice over whether or not it needs to close in April, while Caerphilly said has closed until further notice.

Owing to the government's announcement of further measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Caerphilly Workmen's Hall is closed until further notice. We will try to rearrange the events for later dates, so please stay in touch.

The official unveiling of a memorial to the composers of the Welsh national anthem, due to be held in Caerphilly town on Saturday, March 28, has also been indefinitely postponed.
