Scammers target free school meal parents

Scammers are targeting parents of children eligible for free school meals in Caerphilly County Borough.

Schools across the borough have warned that some parents have received a scam email asking for bank details so their children can receive free school meals.

The scam email reads: “As schools will be closing, if you’re entitled to free school meals, please send your bank details and we’ll make sure you’re supported.”

Council to continue providing free school meals despite coronavirus outbreak

Risca Community Comprehensive School’s headteacher John Kendall warned parents in a blog post.

He said: “We can confirm that this is a scam email and is not official.

“We urge parents that if you receive any emails like this, please do not respond, and delete it immediately.”

Lewis School Pengam said they’d heard some parents had received the scam email.

The school’s headteacher, Chris Parry, said on Facebook: “We can confirm that this is a scam email and is not official.

“We urge parents that if you receive any emails like this, please do not respond, and delete it immediately. Also let us know and we can report to the appropriate authorities.”

Students entitled to free school meals in Caerphilly have been receiving packed lunches from the council.

However, from Monday they will have five frozen meals delivered to their homes on a weekly basis.

The council has been contacted for comment.
