Rugby club offers to help amid coronavirus outbreak

Bargoed RFC has offered help to those who need it amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

The Bulls’ National Championship campaign was recently brought to a premature end because of the pandemic, which has resulted in the Welsh Rugby Union taking the decision to cancel all domestic rugby in Wales.

No team will be promoted or relegated from their respective league this season.

Bargoed looked well placed to challenge for promotion to the Premiership, sitting just five points behind leaders Pontypool, having won 14 of their 16 games.

However, the club has made clear that it fully supports the decision of the national governing body, adding: “It really is important that action is taken and measures implemented to combat the risks.”

And now the players and staff have decided to come together to offer their services.

A statement on the club’s website read: “Bargoed RFC are supporting the local community through the Coronavirus pandemic with players and staff in the Bargoed area helping out some of the local community, particularly some of the more elderly people in the club, and Supporters Club members.”

Many of those who spend their Saturday afternoons supporting the team at Bargoed Park fall into the vulnerable category, and the club are keen to return the favour.

The club added: “It may only be doing some shopping or picking up medication, but we want to support the local community as much as we can, as they support us on and off the field, in the good times and bad.”

The club made their intentions clear in a previous statement, which they are now putting into practice: “It’s at times like these that we need to look after those most vulnerable people in our communities, and the rugby community is no different.”
