Charity urges families to access support during lockdown

Homelessness charity Llamau has urged parents to consider the impact the coronavirus lockdown could have on children’s behaviour.

The charity, which focuses on women and young people, has warned that it is natural for children to feel fear, anxiety and confusion as routines are disrupted, social interactions are reduced, and independence is challenged.

They say some children may not be emotionally developed enough to deal with the unprecedented and changing situation.

Katy Brophy, Llamau’s Family Mediation Worker, said: “It’s really important as parents and guardians to keep in mind that these behavioural differences are a very normal reaction to this ever-changing situation.

“It’s important to remain as calm as possible in order to show them that you understand, and that you’re there to support them.”

The charity is concerned this period of self-isolation and social distancing could cause an increase in family breakdowns, the number one cause of youth homelessness in the UK.

Llamau’s Family Mediation service, is still fully operational, and works with families to offer a confidential and impartial service to help improve family relationships.

Caerphilly County Borough Council also has a range of support available for children and parents.

Cllr Barbara Jones, cabinet member for education and achievement, told Caerphilly Observer: “We recognise that these are stressful times for everyone, but the impact on children and young people should not be underestimated.

“Children respond to stress in different ways, which can also present challenges for parents. I’d like to assure young people and parents that they are not alone and support is available for them.

“Although schools are closed, teachers are still on hand to provide advice and support. Many of our schools also provide online wellbeing resources to support pupils and parents, including guides to talking about coronavirus with younger children.”

Pupils and parents can access resources through the council’s School Counselling Service. These include guides on mindfulness and dealing with anxiety, as well as contact details for a range of agencies that also offer advice.
