Talks over possible job cuts at Nantgarw’s GE Aviation Wales have begun after the company announced it was shedding 13,000 jobs globally.

The engine maintenance plant, which has been operating since 1940 under various guises, employs 1,400 staff.

Consultation over voluntary redundancies is now underway.

A spokesperson for GE Aviation said: “The global impact of the coronavirus pandemic is being felt across the aviation industry.

“The business is consulting with all employees at the Wales site, including those currently furloughed, regarding voluntary severance. The total number of people affected will only be finalised through the consultation process which is currently underway.

“We appreciate the commitment of all our employees during this difficult time, and we regret having to take this action.

“Throughout this time, we remain focussed on protecting the safety of our employees, continuing to serve our customers, and preserving our capability to respond to the industry recovers.”

The company announced plans to cut 13,000 of its 52,000 workforce after it revealed that profits fell 40% in the first three months of this year.

GE Aviation manufactures engines for plan makers Boeing and Airbus.

Three years ago, the Nantgarw site won a £20 million internal contract to service and maintain the company’s GE9X engine – the world’s largest and most fuel efficient jet.

The global coronavirus pandemic, and the restrictions imposed to combat it, has seen a huge drop in air travel.

British Airways, which has a base in Blackwood, has also recently announced it was shedding 12,000 jobs.

British Airways Interior Engineering, at Hawtin Park, is responsible for the refurbishment of the interior of all BA aircraft, including passenger seats, cabin toilet compartments, carpets, and the overhaul of all on-board safety products including slides and rafts.

Caerphilly Observer has asked how many jobs are at risk in Blackwood and we are awaiting a response.
