Tributes have been paid to Senghenydd Rugby Club’s mini and junior chairperson, who has died aged 47 after a four-month battle with cancer.

Stephanie Williams, who passed away on Sunday evening (July 19), has been described by the club as “a truly committed supporter, patron and contributor to Senghenydd RFC and its wider community”.

Stephanie was diagnosed with inoperable gallbladder cancer in March, and underwent chemotherapy at Velindre Cancer Centre.

Stephanie served as the mini and junior chairperson for 14 years, where she organised fixtures, registrations, changing facilities, kits, sponsored events and tours, as well as providing coffee, bacon rolls and hot meals for parents and players.

Growing up, Stephanie watched her father, Jeff Ford play for the senior team, while her younger brother, Alun Ford, played a key role in the club’s Swalec Bowl victory in 2011.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Senghenydd RFC said: “Steph’s most endearing quality was that she never sought praise or accolades for her hard work, dedication and commitment, she simply loved the game, the club and watching children thrive.

“She really was one in a million and leaves a huge legacy thanks to her modest achievements.

“The loss of Steph Williams is felt by all who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing her and our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with Darren, Lewis, Gethyn, Jeff, Sue, Melanie, Alun, Abi and their families and friends at this very sad time.”

The family has thanked staff at Velindre and St David’s Hospice for the care, advice and support they received, as well as family and friends that have “rallied to try and return some of the love and kindness Steph has always shown others”.

Close friend Joanne Davies said: “Steph put up a valiant fight over the past four months but sadly lost her battle on Sunday evening at her home surrounded by her family.

“The community will continue to do what it does best, and that’s to support Steph’s husband, children and family as they come to terms with her untimely and tragic passing.”
