With a new school year upon us, many parents are feeling a little overwhelmed, anxious, nervous, and more. The children may also be struggling. Many have only attended school for a very limited time during the last six months. There has been disruption followed by a new normal, and now more disruption as they return to school.

The schools we work with have been incredible in their planning for a safe and enjoyable experience when the children return. Our relationship with these schools has led to continuous conversations throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, and there was an obvious demand for more teachers and support staff.

Whilst we cannot speak for all schools, we do know that each school will have its own hygiene measures in place and will have been supported by the Local Education Authority. Some examples of measures will include resources not being shared, staggered break and lunchtimes, and additional staff in place.

The Welsh Government has committed to invest a further £29m to schools, which is the equivalent of 600 more teachers and 300 teaching assistants. To support our schools with these demands, we have run a successful and proactive resourcing campaign over the summer. We now have more fully compliant agency teachers and teaching assistants ready for work than ever before, with teachers and teaching assistants coming out of retirement or back into the profession.

The extra resource is required to help children adjust to the new normal and to support them academically, working harder with children at key stages, as well as disadvantaged and vulnerable learners of all ages. Many of our staff are also being placed in long-term positions, offering reassurance to the schools and parents for protection against coronavirus.

Children are resilient and will quickly adapt to this new normal. We are pleased to be supporting schools to help these children adjust as quickly as possible.
