What can I do to stay fit for work this winter?

Winter is always a difficult time of year to manage absence from work, whether it’s time off to care for poorly children, or adults getting poorly from seasonal flu or other viruses, but this year we also have the Covid-19 virus.

We have all learnt vital lessons about managing risk and the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. Whilst at work we can all do some simple tasks. Keep a small bottle of hand sanitiser handy and some antibacterial wipes to clean things down. Ensure there is plenty of ventilation and air circulation. If you need the heating on, try to have a window open to help circulate clean air.

We can also do things for ourselves in and out of work… keep hydrated and eat a balanced diet, and try to keep rested at home. We appreciate these times are challenging for many which is why it is even more important to look after ourselves. If you find you are struggling to rest and sleep, try some calming techniques to relax you. Go for walks for the fresh air and vitamin D.

Consider your working environment and what will have an impact on your health.

If you show any symptoms of flu or sickness, you should stay home and rest. For Covid symptoms, you must stay home, get tested, and advise your workplace immediately if you test positive.

As an employer, it is essential that you plan for the winter months. Offer your employees the flu vaccine if possible, and build relationships with a temporary staffing agency now. If you are likely to need cover, finding agency workers to cover in advance will stop a lot of headaches later on.

At Vetro Recruitment, we provide temporary staffing solutions for the health, social care, and education sectors. If you need additional resources to cover staff sickness, we can help. Alternatively, if you are employed in these industries looking to pick up some ad-hoc shifts, we would also love to speak to you.
