The Argos store in Caerphilly town centre will permanently close “later this year”, retailer Sainsbury’s has confirmed.
It follows the permanent closure of the Argos store on Blackwood High Street last year.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told Caerphilly Observer there are plans to open 350 more Argos stores and collection points within its current supermarket sites by March 2024.
In total, 420 Argos stores will have closed across the UK by 2024 – leaving around 100 standalone stores.
The spokesperson said: “We are in the process of reviewing our estate and can confirm the Caerphilly Argos store will close permanently later this year.
“While Argos stores have been closed due to local restrictions many Argos colleagues have been redeployed to help in other areas of the business, including in Sainsbury’s supermarkets.
“Colleagues at our Caerphilly Argos store will continue to do this during the consultation process and we will do everything possible to find alternative, permanent roles for them within the business.”
The store, which is in Castle Court Shopping Centre, is currently closed due to ongoing lockdown restrictions.
Caerphilly Observer understands the store will close permanently in May and that staff have been told.
The company was bought by Sainsbury’s in 2016. Argos orders can be collected from the Sainsbury’s store in Pontllanfraith.
