Councillors have voted to support a scheme that will encourage residents to opt for reusable nappies.

Caerphilly County Borough Council carried a motion to implement a voucher system to encourage families to switch from disposable nappies to reusable nappies.

The motion was proposed by the independent Councillor Andrew Farina-Childs, who represents the Blackwood ward, at a full council meeting on Tuesday, October 5.

The motion was previously supported by the council’s Environment and Sustainability Scrutiny Committee.

Cllr Farina-Childs hopes the “simple scheme could reduce waste, save money for families, and save our environment”.

To access the vouchers, residents would need to sign up to the scheme, the details of how this would work have not been confirmed yet.

Cllr Farina-Childs said he had brought the motion forward after being approached by a resident.

Similar schemes have been adopted by other local authorities such as Swansea City Council, but uptake had reportedly been low.

Leader of the council, Philippa Marsden said the communications team at the council would be able to help spread awareness and promote the scheme.
