Gerwyn Price will take on Jonny Clayton in an all-Welsh affair in the Grand Slam of Darts quarter-finals on Friday.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Price, from Markham, survived a scare against rising star Bradley Brooks in the last 16 on Wednesday to book his place in the quarter-finals.
Price took control of the tie early on, taking a 5-2 lead. But Brooks, making his Grand Slam of Darts debut, fought back to reduce the deficit to 6-5, before twice levelling the scores at 6-6 and 7-7.
The final four legs saw the players exchange exuberant celebrations in an entertaining contest, but it was reigning world champion and world number one Price who finished the stronger of the two.
Brooks had three key misses at double 14, paving the way for Price to pull clear and clinch victory.
Speaking after the win, Price said: “I made it difficult for myself tonight. It was a tough game in the end – I was fortunate to win but I’m happy to be in the next round.
“I should’ve been 4-1 or possibly 5-0 up, but I just wasn’t at it tonight.
“Fair play to Bradley, he took advantage. He reminds me of how Kim Huybrechts plays, I love it when people give it some back, it gets me going.”
He added: “I think I needed that bit of aggression to get myself going tonight.”
Meanwhile, 47-year-old Clayton, who hails from Carmarthenshire, eased past Northern Ireland’s Nathan Rafferty 10-2 in the last 16.
Speaking ahead of the clash with Price, Clayton said: “We will be best of friends after the match, but it will be a battle when we’re on stage.
“I’ve got so much respect for Gezzy; he’s the world number one for a reason and I will have to be at my very best to beat him.
“I just keep taking each game as it comes and I’m really enjoying myself. I still feel nervous but it doesn’t show in my darts.”
In 2020, Price and Clayton won the World Cup of Darts together for Wales. This year, they reached the semi-final stage of the same competition, losing out to eventual champions Scotland.
Last month, Clayton defeated Price in the World Grand Prix final.
