Bedwas 36-31 Cardiff Met, WRU National Championship
Bedwas RFC returned to winning ways with a victory over Cardiff Met under the Bridgefield floodlights on March 18.
The game started at a frantic pace, and it was the hosts who took an early lead as Alec Jones claimed a try in the left-hand corner, Matty Bancroft’s conversion attempt rebounding off a post.
Bedwas doubled the advantage four minutes later after quick hands put right wing Liam Jenkins over in the opposite corner. This time Bancroft successfully added the conversion – giving Bedwas a 12-0 lead at the Bridgefield.
The visitors hit back five minutes later with a converted try, but Bedwas responded with a Dale Rogers try, converted by Bancroft to restore the 12-point gap.
A fast-paced game ensued, with the university side again reducing the deficit with another converted try.

But Bedwas secured their fourth try and a bonus-point before the half-time break, thanks to Alec Jones’ second try of the match.
Cardiff Met came out firing in the second half, but it was Bedwas who scored the first points of the half. Prop Rhys Hutcherson crossed the try-line to give Bedwas a 29-12 lead.
But the visitors were in no mood to throw in the towel and dented Bedwas’ lead with an unconverted try.
But the game was still in Bedwas’ hands, with Alec Jones bagging his hat-trick in the 62nd minute and Bancroft kicking for the extra two points, extending the lead to 36-17.
Met secured a bonus-point of their own shortly after, with Connor Vickery scoring the Cyncoed-based outfit’s fourth try of the match, which was improved upon by the boot of Steffan Davies.
With the game all but sealed, ill-discipline struck and hat-trick hero Jones turned villain and was sent to the sin-bin for preventing a quick Met restart from a tapped penalty.
The final points of the game were scored by the visitors, with scrum-half Callaghan Smith running in for a try. Davies converted to clinch a losing bonus-point for his side as the match finished 36-31.
Bedwas remain second in the WRU National Championship table with 36 points, six points behind league leaders Bargoed.
Bedwas return to action on Saturday, March 26, where they take on Narberth at 2.30pm.
