Caerphilly Castle Ladies
Caerphilly Castle Ladies will take on Cwmbran Ladies in the Alan Evans League Cup final on May 8

Caerphilly Castle Ladies are set to take on Cwmbran Ladies this weekend – with silverware up for grabs.

The Castle are contesting the Alan Evans League Cup final at Ocean Park Arena, Cardiff, on Sunday, May 8.

They booked their place in the final after a 4-3 extra-time victory away to Pontardawe last month.

The two sides had already met this season in the South Wales Women’s and Girls’ League and West Women Combined League – with Pontardawe coming out on top on both occasions.

During the semi-final, Caerphilly Castle put in a firm defensive performance in the first half, with the game goalless at the break.

The deadlock was broken in the 50th minute, with striker Bethan Williams setting up Chloe Dobson to give Caerphilly the advantage.

As an Alun Evans Cup Final appearance looked all but secured for Caerphilly, a late Pontardawe equaliser meant the game finished 1-1 – with extra time looming.

Within minutes of the restart, Williams broke through the tired Pontardawe defence to put Caerphilly ahead once again.

Shortly after Williams’ goal, Caerphilly captain Claire Bartlett made it 3-1 with a curling effort into the top corner. Half-time in extra-time came with confidence high and Caerphilly in a commanding position.

The heat of the Swansea valley sun took its toll on the visitors however, with Pontardawe scoring two in quick succession to level the game at 3-3.

However, the threat of a penalty shoot-out was soon over as Lauren Anderson poked home the winner after a goal-line scramble.
