Wales have kicked off their World Cup of Darts campaign with a dominant 5-2 win over Philippines on Thursday evening – setting up a second round tie with Austria.
Wales, who are being represented by Markham’s Gerwyn Price and Llanelli’s Jonny Clayton, averaged just over 99 as they brushed aside Filipino duo Lourence Ilagan and RJ Escaros.
Price got off the mark with a blistering start, with Clayton following up a maximum from Price by cleaning up 84 in two darts for an 11-dart opener.
Their opponents fought back to level the scores at 2-2, but finishes of 106 and 108 from Price, sandwiched between a 13-darter, saw the Welsh duo come away with a convincing victory.
Price and Clayton, who won the World Cup for Wales in 2020 will now take on Austria’s Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez – who were runners up in last year’s edition.
Following the win, Price said: “I’ve been doubting myself recently, so today was a big confidence boost.”
“We have a great bond,” Clayton added. “As long as we play our game, I think we’ve got a fantastic chance of getting our title back.”
The competition got underway on June 16 and will conclude on Sunday, June 19. It is being held in Frankfurt, Germany.
