Machen Cricket's second team taking on Llanarth
Machen Cricket’s second team taking on Llanarth

Machen’s two teams managed just three overs of cricket between them as the South East Wales League season reached the halfway point on a soggy Saturday.

The rain affected play elsewhere, with every team from Caerphilly County Borough seeing their games abandoned or cancelled.

Machen’s first team travelled to Tondu but the teams did not get onto the field, leaving Machen having to settle for five points after eight successive wins.

The covers at Machen Welfare Ground allowed the second team’s match against Llanarth to get under way after an hour’s delay, with the overs reduced to 35.

Rhys Mellor-Cretney and Nick Hatton reached 17 for no wicket off three overs when the heavens opened again, and although the teams were ready to continue, a further downpour put a stop to proceedings.

The start of the league’s return fixtures begin on Saturday, July 2 and will see Machen’s first XI travel to Usk, while the second team host Radyr.
